Benefits of C420 Sailing:

  • The C420 is the most commonly raced boat at the high school and collegiate levels in the United States and is the predecessor to the 470 boat sailed at the Olympics.
  • The C420 allows growing sailors to continue their development in the sport as both recreational and competitive sailors once they’ve outgrown smaller dinghy boats.
  • Sailors learn the importance of sailing with a partner as a team and how to maneuver the boat by controlling the trim of the mainsail, jib and spinnaker sails all at once.

About the Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program at the Upper Keys Sailing Club

OUR MISSION
Empowering Youth Through Sailing
We create independent, self-confident and well-grounded youth through the sport of sailing. We are the only organization that offers year-round instruction to children and teens that live in the Upper Keys, Homestead and South Dade areas.  Making the sport accessible and affordable to children of all backgrounds serves as our founding principle.  Through our recreational and competitive programs, we cultivate a life-long passion for sailing while imparting valuable lessons in leadership, sportsmanship and respect for the marine environment.

OUR VISION

  1. 1. We want to empower children and teens of all backgrounds to discover and realize their potential as individuals through the sport of sailing.
  2. 2. As an organization, we strive to be recognized as a welcoming and vibrant hub of youth sailing.

SUPPORT FOR OUR MAINSAILOR SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Mark Sorensen Youth Sailing Program was founded in 2006 as a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization for the express purpose of giving local Florida Keys children of all different backgrounds the opportunity to experience the joy of sailing and to benefit from the lifelong skills and values the sport imparts.  In recent years, as we have increasingly welcomed more Homestead families into our program, we have extended this opportunity to kids living in South Dade as well.

After many years of providing underprivileged children with full and partial tuition benefits to attend our recreational and competitive programs, MSYSP launched in April of 2017 its Mainsailor Scholarship so that donations can be specifically earmarked to sponsor children living in the communities we serve.

Thanks to the generosity of such organizations as the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys as well as other local businesses and individuals that made contributions, MSYSP awarded a total of 18 full scholarships to local kids and teens from the Upper Keys to attend our sailing camp this past summer of 2017.

With so many families affected by Hurricane Irma, the need for continued support of our Mainsailor Scholarship is as great as ever.  Your contributions will be tax deductible and will go directly toward benefit a young sailor.
